add postage & packing, group A, if required ref: pictures/ep-seadisf-0615 Certificate of Discharge for Senior 4th Engineer Harold James Thacker Lidstone issued 13 March 1940 and letter confirming fianal discharge from Capetown 3 July 1942 - Lidstone's last voyage was on board 'Silverash' from New York, but Lidstone was landed in Capetown and admitted to hospital. Silverash was involved in an incident in New York on 11 April 1942 while Lidstone was a crew member, where the crew arrived at the Master'sroom and demanded to be paid. The Master refused and ordered the men back to their quaters. According to the official log, the men then rushed the Master, who grabbing his revolver, shot and killed one of his ABS. A Grand Jury hearing three days later, took ten minutes to aquit Captain Row of Manslaughter. This incident led to the US government lifting restrictions on shore leave for Chinese crew. Lidstone was mentioned in The London Gazette on 1 January 1943 on page 123 and the date 9 October 1942, possibly notifying his death. |
